The word, Trinity, does not appear in the Bible; however, the existence of the triune God is established in both the Old and New Testaments.

The definition of the word Trinity is described in the 1828 Noah Webster Dictionary as meaning, “In theology, the union of three persons in one Godhead, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”

One of my simple scientific analogies to understand the concept of the Trinity for myself is to look at water. It can be found in three different states: vapor, liquid, and solid. They are all water just as Father, Son and Spirit are all God.

Another simple analogy I have used is basic 3rd grade math. It goes like this, 1+1+1=3; however, 1x1x1=1. Father x Son x Spirit = God.

The concept of the Trinity begins at the very beginning of the Bible. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” (Genesis 1:1 NKJV)

The Hebrew word for God in Genesis 1:1 is Elohim. Elohim means a plural form of the Godhead, a singular plurality. Elohim appears 2,570 times in the scriptures. Elohim is just one of the Hebrew words for God. According to Strong’s concordance, Elohim is used more than any other name for God.

It is interesting to me that the first person of the Trinity mentioned in the Bible is neither Father nor Son but the Holy Spirit. “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters,” (Genesis 1:2 NKJV)

The following are just some of the scriptures in the English Bible that describe the plurality of Father, Holy Spirit and Son being one God.

  • The words, “us” and “our”, represent the plurality of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The words, “image” and “likeness,” describe the singularity of God. “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, ‘” (Genesis 1:26 NKJV).
  • This phrase, “Let us”, is also repeated in Genesis 11. “Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech,” (Genesis 11:7 NKJV)
  • The Spirit of God descends, the Father speaks and the beloved Son is pleasing to Him. “When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:16-17 NKJV).
  • The following verse clearly shows the Trinity, “For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.”  (1 John 5:7 NKJV)
  • The “Word.” in the above verse is Jesus the Son. This is verified in the book of John. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,” (John 1:1 NKJV) “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth,” (John 1:14NKJV)

The Bible clearly reveals the concept of the Trinity is in both the Old and New Testaments.
